The Acute Care Gap: Why We're Rethinking Urgent Medical Needs

“How can I ever thank Dr. Nabavi adequately? She always answers my calls with a calming voice and a patient demeanor. It seems nothing rattles her and nothing is beyond her scope. In fact, unbeknownst to me, I was in the midst of a medical crisis when I called her for advice. I had  already gone to urgent care and had no idea that I needed lifesaving emergency surgery, but Dr. Nabavi figured it out within a few short minutes over the phone. I had called her to describe an injury. But Nadia immediately began to ask me ---what I thought were-- a series of "random" questions. When she was finished, she instantly and urgently directed me to the ED. She told me that I had "pain out of proportion" and that I needed to be seen immediately. It turned out that I had necrotizing fasciitis-- also known as the flesh eating disease. The ED doctor rushed me into surgery to save my leg and my life.

“Quite literally saved my life. A simple call late in the evening on a Sunday to Dr. Nabavi, where she asked the right questions quickly and with calm and care, helped me work out that it was the right call to go to the ER. I thought I was fine, and in many ways “riding it out” made sense with my kids at home and not feeling all that rough. But a couple of key things that Dr. Nabavi asked made it clear that waiting until the morning wasn’t safe. And she was right. 

Within an hour of speaking to her, I was not in great shape but thankfully I was already receiving top notch care in the ER: in a room, receiving treatment, and with many of the items that slow down emergency care already handled. I’m not one of those people who goes to urgent care or the ER. And I know how long it can take and that “other people need more urgent care”. I have had plenty of health scares and in the regular business hour visits I would hold on until, I have been told a trip to the ER or urgent care would have been very reasonable. And this felt no different. But because we had Dr. Nabavi available, we tried it out and it is very she likely kept me from having a stroke. 

I cannot thank her enough not only for handling this, but how easy and wonderful she was in handling it. This service is something every family should have, especially if anyone in your home has a chronic condition.

"My family was about to leave the house for the airport when my son fell backwards off of his roller suitcase and hit his head on the kitchen floor. Immediately after, a large welt started forming on the back of his head. Unsure of the severity of his injury and whether we should head to the doctor and postpone our flight, I called Dr Nabavi, who asked me a series of questions before ultimately determining that we were OK to head to the airport with an ice pack in tow.
